Back ‘In Treatment’

In Treatment, which explores the intimacy of a psychotherapist’s office, returns for a fourth, 24-episode season with back-to-back half-hour episodes this Sunday, May 23, 9 pm ET/PT, on HBO. The show will also stream on HBO Max.

HBO will air the remainder of the season in two-episode blocks Sunday and Monday nights from 9-10 pm.

Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba plays Dr. Brooke Taylor, taking over the lead analyst role from Gabriel Byrne’s Dr. Paul Weston. The series also moves from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, where Dr. Taylor helps three patients deal with the global pandemic and other ground-shifting social issues.

Each episode focuses on one patient session. From weekly visit to weekly visit, patients slowly drop their guard, although – if the first three seasons are any guide – it’s not always clear what they’ve learned about themselves.

The dedicated therapists are also far from perfect. Dr. Weston had a rocky marriage and strayed across professionally proscribed boundaries. Likewise, Dr. Taylor’s personal life is complicated.

This season’s patients include:

  • A teenager (Quintessa Swindell) seeking to create her own identity despite her family’s overbearing expectations.
  • A home health aide (Anthony Ramos) who works for a wealthy family’s adult son.
  • A millionaire beach bum turned white-collar criminal (John Benjamin Hickey) reckoning with life after his recent release from prison.

The cast also includes Liza Colón-Zayas as Dr. Taylor’s friend and confidante Rita; and Altered Carbon‘s Joel Kinnaman as her off-again, on-again boyfriend Adam.

The first three seasons of In Treatment (2008-2010), which co-starred Dianne Wiest and Michelle Forbes, stream on HBO Max; and are available to buy for $1.99 per episode via Vudu and other providers.

In Treatment is an adaptation of an Israeli series BeTipul.
