Troubled Siblings and Murder

The Bad Seed, a five-episode New Zealand drama about two brothers and a murder, debuts tomorrow, April 29 on Sundance Now and the AMC+ streaming bundle.

Based on books by Charlotte Grimshaw, The Bad Seed involves siblings Simon Lampton (Matt Minto) and Ford Lampton (Dean O’Gorman), who survive difficult childhoods only to take decidedly different paths as adults.

Simon is a successful obstetrician, with two daughters and a beautiful wife, Karen (Jodie Hillock).

The coarse Ford, once estranged from his younger brother, now lives with his brother’s family in the spare room of his comfortable house. Although Ford would appear the more likely to get into trouble, it is Simon who is having a secret affair with a woman from one of Auckland’s seediest suburbs.

Then things really start to get dicey. The Lamptons’ neighbor, Julia Stevens (Jacqueline Lee Geurts) is found murdered in her own home. Detective Marie Da Silva (Madeleine Sami) suspects someone in the Lampton household.  Complicating matters is the Lamptons’ growing friendship with Roza Hallwright (Chelsie Preston), the wife of the soon-to-be next Prime Minister (Xavier Horan). Is their friendship born of Simon’s campaign contributions – or something else?

The Bad Seed aired originally on TVNZ 1 in April 2018.

Sundance Now offers a $6.99 pay-as-you-go monthly plan and an annual $59.99 ($4.99/month) plan. Both options come with a seven-day free trial.

AMC+, which shows ad-free programming from AMC, Shudder, Sundance Now, IFC Films Unlimited and other sources, costs $8.99 a month with a seven-day free trial. You can subscribe via Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Roku, Sling TV, and some cable and dish providers.
