Stream ‘Lonesome Doves’

Yesterday, The Savvy Screener reported on where you can stream Brokeback Mountain, Terms of Endearment, The Last Picture Show and other titles associated with the late western novelist Larry McMurtry (short answer: Amazon Prime). Today: where you can stream the Lonesome Dove franchise (short answer: Starz).

Lonesome Dove (1989, Starz)

Perhaps his greatest legacy, McMurtry’s 1985 novel Lonesome Dove won a Pulitzer Prize and was adapted into this four-episode CBS miniseries – which won seven Emmy Awards, as well as Golden Globes for Best TV Miniseries/Motion Picture, and for Robert Duvall as Best Actor. Duvall played Gus McCrae and Tommy Lee Jones was Woodrow F. Call, two former Texas Rangers who go on an adventure into Montana Territory.

Non-Starz subscribers can buy the complete Lonesome Dove starting at $4.99 SD from Amazon, Google Play, iTunes and YouTube.

Three other Lonesome Dove sequels and prequels by McMurtry were also adapted into TV miniseries, with McMurtry co-writing each of them:

Streets of Laredo (1995, Starz)

This CBS three-parter, starring James Garner (as Call) and Sissy Spacek, was based on a 1993 McMurtry novel.

Non-Starz subscribers can stream Streets of Laredo free if your library is part of Hoopla, or buy the complete miniseries for $3.99 from Amazon.

Dead Man’s Walk (1996, Starz)

This ABC two-parter, with David Arquette as McCrae and Jonny Lee Miller as Call, was based on a 1995 McMurtry novel.

Non-Starz subscribers can stream Dead Man’s Walk free if your library is part of Hoopla, or buy the complete miniseries for $5.97 from Amazon.

Comanche Moon (2008)

This CBS three-parter, with Steve Zahn and Karl Urban as McCrae and Call, was based on a 1997 McMurtry novel.

You can stream it for $3.99 from several sources.

McMurtry was not involved with two other series based on his Lonesome Dove characters:

Return to Lonesome Dove (1993, Starz)

This four-episode CBS miniseries starred Jon Voight (as Call) and Barbara Hershey.

Non-Starz subscribers can buy the complete miniseries for $4.99 from Amazon or iTunes

Lonesome Dove: The Series (1994-1996)

Retitled Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years for its second season, this was a 22-episode syndicated series, now notable largely for co-starring a pre-Will & Grace Eric McCormack.

You can buy a DVD set of season one for $8.64 from Amazon.
