Swedish Superspy

Agent Hamilton, a 10-episode series about a James Bond-like Swedish superspy, debuts tomorrow, March 30, on MHz Choice.

Jakob Oftebro stars as Carl Gustaf Gilbert Hamilton, a nobleman who trains with the U.S. Navy Seals before joining the Swedish intelligence service. There he is tasked with finding the mysterious culprits behind a series of bombings and cyberattacks in Stockholm.

The show also stars Krister Henriksson (pictured below) as Hamilton’s boss DG, familiarly known as The Old Man. The cast includes Nina Zanjani, Peter Andersson, Katia Winter and Chris Austin.

The series first ran in 2020 on the Nordic pay channel C More Entertainment AB and then on Sweden’s TV4.

A second season is planned.

Author Jan Guillou introduced Hamilton to readers in a 1986 novel Coq Rouge. Over the next 10 years Guillou published 11 more Hamilton thrillers, drawing on his espionage background to plot his stories.

In 1973, working as a journalist, Guillou helped expose a secret military intelligence organization in Sweden. Thirty years later, a tabloid accused Guillou of having collaborated with the KGB during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He denied the charges, saying his KGB outreach had been part of his reporting.

Guillou’s novels have been adapted for film and TV before, with Stellan Skarsgård, Peter Haber, Stefan Sauk and Fargo’s Peter Stomare all taking on the lead role.
