This Friday, January 15, free over-the-air “faith and family” channel Light TV – run by reality show kingpin Mark Burnett and his wife, actress and producer Roma Downey — will be replaced officially by African American-targeted The Grio, run by growing media mogul Byron Allen.

The Grio

Light TV lasted four years with such shows as Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?, Highway to Heaven, Heartland, Patty Duke and Green Acres, plus wholesome movies. A teaser now running continually for The Grio promises “news, movies and some of the biggest names in entertainment.”

Allen Media Group

Allen’s Allen Media Group bought Light TV in October from MGM, where Burnett is president of MGM Television and Downey is president of the studio’s faith and family division, LightWorkers Media.

The Grio will join Scripps’ Bounce as over-the-air channels targeting the Black community. While The Grio says its launch is “in honor of Martin Luther King Jr Day,” Bounce was founded 10 years ago by a group that included Martin Luther King III. Fox Tv Stations, The Grio

The Grio’s affiliate lineup boasts subchannels of 11 Fox-owned TV stations, which include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other major markets. To watch, you’ll need to have an antenna hooked up to your TV set and either tune to where Light TV used to be, or rescan your channels to see if The Grio is available in your area.

CBS-owned stations in similar top markets, meanwhile, have quietly launched a free over-the-air service called Fave TV, whose fare includes reruns of such Black-centric series as The Jamie Foxx Show and Run’s House. To find your local Fave TV channel number, visit RabbitEars.
