Today, August 20, HBO Max boosts its programming lineup with four one-hour comedy specials, and a reality dating show in which five people put their current relationships on hold so they can play the field in London.

For Laughs

HA Comedy Festival: The Art of Comedy

Recorded at the Empire Theater in San Antonio, The HA Comedy Festival: The Art of Comedy is a multi-act stand-up special that showcases “the best of the fest.” Comedian/actress Anjelah Johnson hosts Latinx stand-ups who include Gina Brillon, David del Rosario, Carmen Lynch, Monique Marvez, Pedro Salinas, Jesus Trejo and Mark Viera. The Art of Comedy also features appearances by Eugenio Derbez, Eva Longoria and Danny Trejo.

Rose Matafeo: Horndog

Rose Matafeo wants you to know she has kissed nearly 10 men in her life. So why not a set exploring the concept of horniness?  Is horniness more than “simply wanting to bone everyone, all the time?” Rose Matafeo: Horndog has played at comedy festivals around the word, including a run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Beth Stelling: Girl Daddy

Beth Stelling reflects on the family, society and the exes who have made her the comedian she is today. Responding to her “co-workers’ lazy, fear-driven #MeToo material,” Stelling walks the audience through “the humorous side of tough conversations around consent, chauvinism and women’s bodily autonomy.” Beth Stelling: Girl Daddy is produced by Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco.

James Veitch: Straight to VHS

Another Team Coco production, James Veitch: Straight to VHS is a special that the comedian claims “he can barely remember doing.” In fact, the morning of Straight to VHS’s taping, Veitch accidentally doubled his antidepressant dosage, causing him to call poison-control in a panic. Not to worry. The show, consisting of “strong material” that will “probs change lives,” lands today on HBO Max.

For Love?

Singletown, a 15-episode reality series which aired first in 2019 on Britain’s ITV2, stars five couples who agree to put their relationships on hold and move in with new roommates in the same luxury apartment building.

To spice things up, all five couples go on dates involving “out-of-this-world parties and unforgettable experiences.” The show also has a matchmaking mentor and a weekly Love Locket ceremony, in which the couples must decide whether to reunite – or stay in Singletown.
