Stream Alan Parker Films

If your local library is affiliated with Hoopla, you can stream two of the late Alan Parker’s most honored films for free. If you also subscribe to Amazon Prime, you can add another three Alan Parker films to your list. The very versatile Parker died today, July 31, at the age of 76.

Hoopla

Evita (1996)

Madonna and Antonio Banderas star in the filmed version of the Broadway musical, which earned Parker one of three Golden Globe nominations for Best Director (the others were for 1988’s Mississippi Burning and 1978’s Midnight Express).

The Commitments (1991)

This dramedy with lots of ‘60s-era soul music sung by actors playing working class Irish youth won Parker two British BAFTA Awards: for Best Direction and Best Film. (Parker also won a Best Direction BAFTA for Midnight Express.)

Amazon Prime

Mississippi Burning (1988)

Loosely based on the 1964 murders of civil rights workers Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner, Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe star in this crime drama that earned Parker one of his two Oscar nominations for Best Director (the other was 1978’s Midnight Express, which is only available for rental or purchase).

Birdy (1984)

Nicholas Cage and Matthew Modine star in this drama of two wounded Vietnam War vets, which won the Cannes Film Festival’s Grand Prize of the Jury.

Bugsy Malone (1976)

Child actors, led by Jodie Foster, play all the roles in this one-of-a-kind gangster musical, which won Parker a BAFTA for Best Screenplay.

Bonus Freebie

Parker won his first BAFTA in the category of Best Single Play for The Evacuees (1975), an episode of the Play for Today BBC series about two Jewish boys evacuated during the blitz. You can stream The Evacuees in its entirety right here:
