‘Remembering Ghostbusters’

Free streamer Crackle is now showing Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters, a full-length documentary about the making of the 1984 supernatural comedy.

Remembering Ghostbusters features 46 interviews with cast and crew, including the movie’s stars Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts and William Atherton, as well as director Ivan Reitman. It also uses never-before-seen archival footage about the making of the film.

Two leads – Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver – were not interviewed for the documentary. Of course, you can always watch them in Ghostbusters and its sequel, Ghostbusters II (1989).

You can rent Ghostbusters, about three entrepreneurial parapsychologists who rescue New York City from an other-worldy apocalypse, starting at $2.99 from FandangoNow, Vudu and other providers.

You can watch the sequel from $2.99 via Amazon, Vudu and other services.

The Ghostbusters Franchise

The blockbuster film led to numerous animated iterations, including:

The Real Ghostbusters (1986-1991), which aired on ABC for seven seasons and 140 episodes. It starred the voices of Maurice LaMarche, Frank Welker (Fred on the original Scooby Doo), Arsenio Hall and Full House’s Dave Coulier. This is not to be confused with Filmation’s Ghostbusters (1986), which aired for one 65-episode season and was based on the 1975 live-action TV series (more about that at the end of this article). You can buy individual episodes of The Real Ghostbusters for $1.99 and entire seasons for $9.99 on Amazon.

Extreme Ghostbusters (1997), a syndicated 40-episode follow-up that again featured Maurice LaMarche, along with America’s Funniest Home Videos’ Alfonso Ribeiro and master-of-impressions Billy West. You can stream that series with a Hulu subscription.

Motion Picture Reboot

Ghostbusters was reimagined in 2016 with female leads (Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones) and a cast that also included Chris Hemsworth, Ed Begley, Jr., and Charles Dance. You can rent it for $2.99 via FandangoNow and other providers.

The Original Gang Returns in 2021

Ghostbusters: Afterlife, starring Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, is slated for a 2021 theatrical release. The premise: A single mother and her two children return to a small town, where they discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters. The film also marks the return of Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts (Ramis died in 2014). Ivan Reitman’s son Jason will direct.

Wait, What About the First Ghost Busters?

In 1975, CBS aired one season (15 episodes) of a live-action children’s sitcom, The Ghost Busters, starring F-Troop alumni Larry Storch and Forrest Tucker as world-saving ghost detectives assisted by a gorilla. The show was replete with slapstick, classic pop culture references and cheesy gags.

You can stream all 15 episodes for free on YouTube.
