Free HBO Shows, Movies

HBO is making nine of its signature series available to watch for free via HBO Now, its streaming service, and HBO Go (the streaming app that’s usually accessible only to cable subscribers), starting today, April 3.

The pay channel is also offering documentaries and select Warner Bros. movies (altogether almost 500 hours of programming). HBO did not say how long the free streaming feast will last, so if you are new to HBO, we offer a few recommendations about where to start.

Our Picks

Succession (two seasons) – Logan Roy (Brian Cox) is patriarch of a dysfunctional family-run media empire that includes sons Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Connor (Alan Ruck), as well as daughter Shiv (Sarah Snook). Is the retirement-age Logan serious about turning the reigns over to someone or is it all just a cruel game? The show also stars Nicholas Braun as awkward but sly cousin Greg and Matthew Macfadyen as Tom, Shiv’s striving but clueless husband.

Veep (seven seasons) – Julia Louis Dreyfus stars as Selina Meyer, vice president and perennial presidential candidate, in Armando Iannucci’s hilarious, merciless comedy about the world of DC politics. Meyer is aided and abetted by her fawning aide Gary Walsh (Tony Hale) and advisors Amy Brookheimer (Anna Chlumsky), Dan Egan (Reid Scott), Mike McLintock (Matt Walsh) and Kent Davison (Gary Cole). Presidential assistant and political aspirant Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons) may be the most obnoxious personality in Washington politics – or on a TV show.

Silicon Valley (six seasons) – A house full of coders try to turn Richard Hendricks’ (Thomas Middleditch) algorithm into a billion-dollar company. Their technological aspirations – and dreams – are plagued by a lot of bugs. The cast includes Kumail Nanjiani, Martin Starr, TJ Miller, Josh Brener, Amanda Crew and Zach Woods. Although the series ran out of juice in its final season, the show presents an array of memorable character actors, including the soft-spoken and bizarre Woods who has found a new home on HBO’s science-fiction comedy, Avenue 5 (also an Iannucci creation).

Other available series include Ballers (five seasons), Barry (two seasons), Six Feet Under (five seasons), The Sopranos (seven seasons), True Blood (seven seasons) and The Wire (five seasons).

HBO has also removed its paywall for 10 documentaries and docuseries, including The Apollo, The Case Against Adnan Syed, and McMillon$.
