Back to ‘Concentration’

Last time we checked in on the classic game show, Concentration, Buzzr was about to resurrect a version hosted by Alex Trebek from 1987 to 1991, but we were nostalgic for the original series hosted by Hugh Downs from 1958 to 1959.

Turns out that we totally neglected the years in between, when Jack Narz hosted the series from 1973 to 1977. Today Buzzr brings that version back, weekdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 4 pm and 4:30 pm.

Now, let’s revisit those three hosts and their Concentration years:

Hugh Downs

Downs hosted the original NBC daytime show, in which contestants combined memory and puzzle-solving skills to win prizes.

Few episodes still exist, but we’ve got one below, thanks to the Internet Archive.

From 1968, here’s an episode of Concentration’s fifth annual “Challenge of Champions”:

Hugh Downs, now 99, retired in 1999 after 21 years co-hosting ABC’s 20/20.

Jack Narz

Buzzr’s airings will start with 1976 episodes of Narz’s syndicated version.

Here’s a sample game posted by the channel:

Jack Narz passed away at 85 in 2008.

Alex Trebek

NBC later launched another daytime version, now called Classic Concentration. Hosted by Alex Trebek, who was already at the helm of Jeopardy, it ran from 1987 through 1991.

Buzzr still airs two episodes of Classic Concentration weekdays at 1 pm ET, and four episodes on Saturdays starting at 4 pm.

Here, thanks to the YouTube site of another game show legend, Wink Martindale, is the 1987 “test episode” of Classic Concentration:

Wink Martindale, 86, now runs Wink’s Vault on YouTube and still makes occasional guest appearances.

Alex Trebek, 79, is now in his 36th season hosting Jeopardy.
