More Classic Recasts

Dy-No-Mite! Viola Davis, Andre Braugher and Tiffany Haddish will star in a live reboot of the classic sitcom Good Times, pairing up with a second live offering of All in the Family this coming Wednesday, December 18, at 8 pm ET on ABC.

Davis has been cast as Florida Evans, Braugher as James Evans, and Haddish as Willona Woods, roles originally played by Esther Rolle, John Amos and Ja’Net Du Bois. Jay Pharoah takes on the Jimmie Walker role of J.J. “Dy-No-Mite” Evans, with Asante Blackk and Corinne Foxx playing his siblings Michael and Selma.

Jharrel Jerome has also been cast in Good Times, and Kevin Bacon, Jesse Eisenberg and Justina Machado in All in the Family. Who those four are playing won’t be identified until airtime, presumably because doing so would reveal exactly which classic episodes will be recreated.

We suspect they’ll be Christmas episodes of each series, since ABC says the new special is “holiday-inspired.”

We also suspect that the promised “show-stopping musical performance” by Patti Labelle and Anthony Anderson will be the Good Times theme song, heard here in its original version as sung by Blinky Williams and Jim Gilstrap:

The All in the Family theme song will again be sung by Woody Harrelson and Marisa Tomei, who will reprise last May’s roles of Archie and Edith Bunker. Here’s their earlier performance of the theme:

Ellie Kemper and Ike Barinholtz will once again play the Bunkers’ daughter Gloria and son-in-law Mike.

Wednesday’s 90-minute special is officially titled Live in Front of a Studio Audience: ‘All in the Family’ and ‘Good Times.’
