Film Noir Fan Feast

The Film Detective, which streams classic movies and TV shows for free, is adding to its film noir library as part of a “Noirvember” promotion.

The films star a range of notable noir actors including Ava Gardner, George Raft and – the one-and-only Ward Cleaver, aka, Hugh Beaumont.

Whistle Stop (1946). Ava Gardner is a beautiful young woman, who returns to her small hometown, the type of place that used to be called a “whistle stop.” Her presence ignites the jealousy of a former beau (George Raft), who becomes incensed when she takes up with his rival, a night club owner (Tom Conway). Murder plans follow. The cast ialso ncludes Victor McLaglen, Jane Nigh and Florence Bates.

Money Madness (1948). Bank robber Steve Clark (Leave it to Beaver’s Beaumont) hides out in a small town, where he gets a job as a cab driver and meets Julie Saunders (Frances Rafferty). They fall in love and marry, but he soon draws her into his dangerous scheme to launder his ill-gotten booty. Directed by Sam Newfield under the alias Peter Stewart.

D.O.A. (1949). Edmond O’Brien is an accountant who wakes up after a night of partying to learn he has been given a lethal toxin that will kill him in one week. He desperately retraces his steps to find his would-be murderer.

The Film Detective is also touting a new HD transfer of A Life at Stake (1955), starring Murder, She Wrote’s Angela Lansbury as a married woman with a proposed land deal for an architect (Keith Andes). They start an affair, but the something potentially more lethal is in the works.
