Classic Oscar Binge

The 91st annual Academy Awards ceremony will air this Sunday, February 24, at 8 pm ET on ABC.

To celebrate, starting Friday, classic movie/TV streamer The Film Detective will run a weekend of Oscar-winning and nominated films from the last 80 years.

Among the highlights:

My Man Godfrey (1936). Socialite Carol Lombard hires a vagrant, Godfrey (William Powell), to serve as the family butler, only to fall in love with him. It was the first movie to receive an Oscar nomination in each acting category, as well as in best directing and acting. You can also watch it here:

A Star Is Born (1937). The original, starring Janet Gaynor and Frederic March, was nominated for seven Oscars and took home statues for Best Writing and Original Screenplay, along with an Honorary Award. It led to three remakes, including last year’s edition with Lady GaGa and Bradley Cooper. That version, nominated for eight Academy Awards, is now available to rent online starting at $5.99 from Vudu and other providers. Be sure to read The Savvy Screener’s article providing more information about all four versions, including where to stream them.

Watch the original below:

Sounder (1972). Based on a young adult novel by William H. Armstrong, the story of a Depression-era black sharecropping family whose father is imprisoned for stealing a ham, was nominated for four Oscars. Cicely Tyson, nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, is slated to be the first African-American woman to receive an Honorary Award at this year’s ceremony. You can watch Sounder in its entirety right here:
