Shipka’s ‘Sabrina’ Friday

Kiernan Shipka, who rose to fame as young Sally Draper on Mad Men, continues coming of age tomorrow when she debuts as Sabrina the Teenage Witch in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

As you can tell from the title, Shipka’s Sabrina is a far cry from Melissa Joan Hart’s comedic Sabrina the Teenage Witch of yesteryear. Instead, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a dark series that finds 16-year-old Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal – while fighting against evil forces that threaten her, her family, and…well, the entire world.

The trailer itself is “spell-binding”:

You’ll be able to find 10 episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix, where 92 episodes (seven seasons) of Mad Men are already available. A second season of Shipka’s new series has already been ordered.

If you’d like to compare the new Sabrina with the “old” Sabrina, we suggest tuning in to free over-the-air channel Antenna TV, where the 1996-2003 ABC sitcom holds forth at 1 pm ET Saturdays and Sundays. You can also catch a 10-hour “Spell-O-Ween” Sabrina the Teenage Witch marathon this coming Tuesday, Halloween eve, starting at 6 pm.  (For more comedic witchery, a 23-hour Bewitched marathon will follow at 5 am Wednesday.)

Here’s episode one of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, it begins on her 16th birthday:

As its name implies, you can get Antenna TV by hooking up an antenna to your TV set. Visit its “Channel Finder” page to find your local station.

If you prefer to stream the original Sabrina, 163 half-hours (seven seasons) are available to Amazon PrimeHulu or CBS All Access subscribers. You can also watch the first 10 episodes free on CBS.com.

Melissa Joan Hart also starred in the original 90-minute series pilot, which aired on Showtime in 1996. That movie-length version is available to Amazon Prime subscribers — or completely free to anyone, Roku user or not, on the new Roku Channel. You can also watch it right here:

Unlike the series, the Sabrina the Teenage Witch pilot was set in the Archie comics town of Riverdale!

Which brings us full circle, back to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, since it comes from the same folks who turned Archie into The CW’s much darker Riverdale series, now in its third season. The two seasons are now streaming on Netflix.
