More ‘Lore’ Gore

A second, six-episode season of Lore, a ghoulish ‘true-tale’ anthology based on Aaron Mahnke’s podcast, debuts today on Amazon Prime.

The show, whose cast includes Ray Donovan’s Paula Malcolmson, explores the disturbing stories behind today’s myths and legends.

Season two episodes are:

“Burke and Hare: In the Name of Science.” Two shunned Irish immigrants in Scotland start off as grave robbers to sell the dead to doctors but become prolific mass murderers.

“Elizabeth Bathory: Mirror, Mirror.” The aging Countess of Blood is running out of virginal peasants, so she brings in a noble to start a new cycle of torture and murder.

“Hinterkaifeck: Ghosts in the Attic.” In the German hinterlands  between World Wars, a family goes to bed not knowing a killer living in the walls and attics is waiting to strike.

“Prague Clock: The Curse of the Orloj.” Two brothers are clockmakers who race against the curse of the Orloj, which is believed to have brought the Black Plague to Prague. There is, however, a price to pay for their efforts.

“Mary Webster: The Witch of Hadley.” A young woman must rectify a fatal mistake before a mob hangs the town’s ‘Old Witch,’ Mary Webster. This tale is set 11 years before and 100 miles from Salem, Massachusetts.

“Jack Parsons: The Devil and the Divine.” In 1922, Parsons thought it was possible to send a rocket into space and conjure a demon. By 1952 he had done both. “But all he cared about was the scarlet woman he had both summoned, and lost.”

Jack Parsons, incidentally, is the focus of CBS All Access’ 10-episode series Strange Angel  — based on a book about him by George Pendle. It follows Parsons from his days as a janitor at a chemical factory in 1930s’ Los Angeles, dreaming about rocketry, to his pursuit of the occult.

You can watch both seasons of Lore at Amazon with a Prime subscription.
