Subscription streamer MHz Choice will serve a Scandinavian feast over the next two months with the premieres of five series from Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

Varg Veum

The new action starts today with season one of the Norwegian Scandi noir Varg Veum. These six 90-minute films star Trond Espen Seim as the title private detective made famous in a series of novels by Gunnar Staalesen.

Veum is described as “a somewhat brooding, slightly boozy, former child welfare worker ex-communicated from the field for beating up a drug dealer.” Let’s have a look!

The films in season one either ran in theaters or went straight to DVD in 2007 and 2008. A second series of six films, all of which ran theatrically from 2010 to 2012, will premiere on MHz Choice two weeks from today, October 23.

Those Who Kill and Sandhamn Murders

Next month, MHz Choice will continue in the Nordic noir mode with the premieres of Denmark’s Those Who Kill on November 6 and Sweden’s Sandhamn Murders on November 13.

Jakob Cedergren stars as a cop in both series. In Those Who Kill, he teams with Lars Mikkelsen to investigate serial murders in Copenhagen. In Sandhamn Murders, he solves murder mysteries on an “idyllic” Swedish island, with Alexandra Rapaport also featured.  Both Mikkelson and Rapaport also star in MHz Choice’s pan-Scandi cop series The Team.

Those Who Kill consisted of five 90-minute TV episodes in 2010 and a theatrical film in 2011. A second season, with a different cast, is planned for 2019. The series was remade as a 2014 US series starring Chloë Sevigny, which premiered on A&E and then moved to Lifetime Movie Network. That show’s 10 hour-long episodes can now be purchased for $1.99 each from various sources.

Sandhamn Murders, based on a series of novels by Viveca Sten, originally ran for five seasons from 2010 to 2015. Each season consisted of three or four 90-minute episodes. Following the premiere of season one on November 13, MHz will unveil the other seasons on subsequent Tuesdays through December 11. A sixth season ran earlier this year in Sweden.

Acquitted and Lola Upside Down

MHz’s final two Scandinavian premieres this fall are perhaps most anticipated by international TV aficionados.

Acquitted, debuting Tuesday, November 20, was reportedly Norway’s most popular crime series when it ran in 2015 and 2016. It’s about a businessman who returns to his hometown 20 years after being acquitted of his high school sweetheart’s murder. The townfolk, though, still think he’s guilty, so he sets out to clear his name.

Following the debut of season one (10 45-minute episodes) on November 20, MHz will unveil season two (eight episodes) a month later, on December 18.

Finland’s Lola Upside Down, debuting Tuesday, December 4, is said to evoke Twin Peaks in its surreal coming-of-age story about teenage girls in a small coastal town filled with quirky characters. Based on a novel by Monika Fagerholm, the six-episode miniseries from 2016 was recently named a “Show to Watch” this fall by The New York Times.
