What shows would kids recommend to other kids?

“Matt Chat” is a column in which The Savvy Screener’s Laurie Pasiuk talks to her 10-year-old son Matthew about programs he likes to watch.

In today’s article, Matt chats about Sam & Cat, a live-action series about two roommates, Sam Puckett (Jennette McCurdy) and Cat Valentine (Ariana Grande), who start a baby-sitting service. The show ran for one 35-episode season (2013-2014) on Nickelodeon.

You can see now reruns of Sam & Cat Wednesdays from 9 am to 3 pm ET on the TeenNick channel. For streamers, TeenNick is available as a $5 Sling TV add-on to kids packages, or as part of several DirecTV Now packages.

You can also buy individual episodes for $1.99 SD/$2.99 HD from AmazonYouTube or a host of other providers.

Laurie:  Why do you like ‘Sam & Cat’ so much?

Matt:  Because the two main characters come from two other shows I like watching: iCarly [2007-2012] and Victorious [2010-2013]. The first one, iCarly, is about three kids doing a web TV show that gets popular and they do a lot of funny things on the show and after the show. Victorious is about teenagers going to school, at Hollywood Arts High School.

There are a lot of connections between the shows. There was an iCarly easter egg in Victorious. When Trina beat up a robber, there was an iCarly sticker on the locker. There is also an easter egg in Victorious when the new principal comes in. The principal is played by the same actress [Yvette Nicole Brown] who played the movie theater manager in Drake & Josh [2004-2007]. Drake & Josh [which starred Drake Bell as Drake Parker and Josh Peck as Josh Nichols] also had the actress who plays Carly [Miranda Cosgrove] in iCarly, only she was their little sister Megan, and she was mean to them.

Laurie: What is the show about?

Matt:  Sam leaves Seattle after Carly moves to Italy to live with her dad and they stop doing iCarly. She is riding her motorcycle in Los Angeles when she sees Cat fall into a garbage bin that is being emptied into a garbage truck. She saves her from being crushed. Then Cat’s grandma decides to move to a retirement home, so Sam decides to move in with Cat and they start a babysitting business.

Laurie: Who is your favorite character?

Matt:  Dice [Cameron Ocasi], a boy who lives in the building.

Laurie: Why does that make him your favorite?

Matt:  Because he’s got good hair and he does magic.

Laurie: What’s your favorite episode?

Matt: #FavoriteShow, when Sam and Cat try to save their favorite show. Sam and Dice try to steal a lamp from the show to give to Cat. Dice gets caught but Sam gets the props sent to their apartment to cheer up Cat.
