A ‘Concentration’ Puzzle

(Above: Can you solve Buzzer’s ‘Concentration’ puzzle? Answer is at bottom of story)

Let’s solve a puzzle!

Ask baby boomers who hosted the classic Concentration game show, and they’ll answer Hugh Downs.

Ask the Buzzr channel who hosted the Classic Concentration game show, and they’ll answer Alex Trebek.

Who’s correct?

Both of them!

Hugh Downs

Downs hosted the original NBC daytime show, in which contestants combined memory and puzzle-solving skills to win prizes, from its 1958 debut through 1969.

Few episodes still exist, but we’ve got one below, thanks to the Internet Archive.

From 1968, here’s an episode of Concentration’s fifth annual “Challenge of Champions”:

Alex Trebek

NBC later launched another daytime version, now called Classic Concentration. Hosted by Alex Trebek, who was already at the helm of Jeopardy, it ran from 1987 through 1991. Reruns continued until 1994, but the show hasn’t aired since.

That’s about to change. On Sunday, September 30, as part of its annual “Lost and Found” programming, Buzzr will resurrect the first two episodes of Trebek’s Classic Concentration at 4 pm and 4:30 pm ET. Then, starting Monday, October 1, two episodes of the show will run every weekday at 1 pm.

Here, thanks to the YouTube site of another game show legend, Wink Martindale, is the 1987 “test episode” of Classic Concentration:

Where are they now?

Hugh Downs, now 97, retired in 1999 after 21 years of co-hosting ABC’s 20/20.

Wink Martindale, 84, runs Wink’s Vault on YouTube and still makes occasional guest appearances.

Alex Trebek, 78, continues to host Jeopardy, now in its 35th season. Trebek did recently hint, however, that he is considering retirement in a couple of years.
