Aretha’s Funeral Service

Free over-the-air channel Bounce TV and its sister subscription streaming service Brown Sugar will carry Aretha Franklin’s memorial service live from Detroit tomorrow morning, August 31, starting at 10 am ET. The event is scheduled to last until 3 pm.

If you don’t have an antenna hooked up to your TV set nor a Brown Sugar subscription, don’t despair. You should be able to find the memorial service streaming live on such online news sites as NPR.

Artists scheduled to perform include Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Chaka Khan, Ronald Isley and Shirley Caesar. Speakers will include Smokey Robinson, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and former President Bill Clinton.

Bounce TV and Brown Sugar will kick off their joint coverage with an hour-long special, Celebrating the Queen of Soul, at 9 am.

In addition, Bounce TV will show a tribute to Franklin on Saturday, September 29, at 1 am ET as part of the Black Music Honors celebration. Taped just hours after the Queen of Soul’s death two weeks ago today, the segment features Angela Winbush, Paris Bennett and Syleena Johnson performing one of Franklin’s signatures tunes,  “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

This show will also be syndicated on other over-the-air stations starting Saturday, September 8. Check here for a partial list of stations and times around the country.

You can watch Bounce TV free, without a pay TV subscription, by using an antenna. Visit the channel’s Find Us page to locate your local station.

Brown Sugar, which normally features the “baddest African-American movies of all-time,” offers a free seven-day trial, after which you will be billed $3.99 a month. You can stream it at, via Amazon Prime, or via Android, iOS, Amazon Kindle/Fire, Apple TV and Roku apps.
