Netflix has grabbed 51 Daytime Emmy Award nominations and Amazon Prime 49, marking a turnaround from last year when Amazon had 50 but Netflix only 36.
Hulu, shut out last year, received one nomination this year – placing it behind such other streaming services as go90 (nine nominations, all for the series Zac & Mia), YouTube Red (six, led by three nods for Roman Atwood’s Day Dreams), Facebook Watch (three, all for Mind of a Chef), and – with two nods apiece — Broadway HD, Ora TV and VME TV.
Netflix’s total trailed only CBS, with 69 nods, and broadcast syndicators, with 66 combined nominations.
Amazon’s soap opera The Bay, which has already won several Emmys including last year’s trophy for Outstanding Digital Daytime Drama, received 15 nominations, up five from last year.
Richard Brooks, star of The Rich and The Ruthless, captured Urban Movie Channel’s sole nomination, for Lead Actor in a Digital Daytime Drama. He’ll be competing against The Bay’s Kristos Andrews, Zac & Mia’s Kian Lawley, Eastsiders’ Van Hansis, and Giants’ James Bland (Issa Rae’s YouTube channel).
Amazon and Netflix picked up one nomination each for both Pre-School Children’s Series and Children’s or Family Viewing Series. Amazon’s nods came for Dino Dana and Annedroids respectively, Netflix’s for Julie’s Greenroom and Free Rein.
In other program categories, Roman Atwood’s Day Dreams was nominated for Special Class Series, Mind of a Chef for Culinary Program, Ora TV’s Larry King Now for Talk Show Informative, and VME TV’s SuperLatina with Gaby Natale for Entertainment Program in Spanish.
East Los High received Hulu’s sole nomination in the category Directing Special Class, where Broadway HD’s Disney’s Broadway Hits is also competing, along with Amazon’s An American Girl Story: Summer Camp, Friends for Life.
The 45th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, ostensibly honoring content shown between 2 am and 6 pm local time in 2017, will take place Sunday, April 29, in Pasadena, Calif. Hosts will be Mario Lopez, from the syndicated series Extra, and Sheryl Underwood, from CBS’s The Talk. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences did not provide a time, nor say if the event would be televised or streamed. Two days earlier, the Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards will also be held in Pasadena.
