‘Naples ‘44’ on iTunes

Oscar-nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) voices World War II British intelligence officer Norman Lewis’ own words in Naples ’44, an unusual documentary available today on iTunes for $4.99.

Based on Lewis’ 1978 memoir Naples ’44: A World War II Diary of Occupied Italy, the film “imagines him returning many years later to the city that charmed and seduced him.”

The film recreates a year in the war-torn city by combining Cumberbatch’s narration, new footage of an unidentified actor playing an older Lewis, archival footage, and clips from Naples-set movies like Catch-22, Paisan and The Skin, resulting in cameos from such stars as Alan Arkin, Marcello Mastroianni and Ernest Borgnine.
