Flip Wilson Tribute

Over-the-air channel GetTV will celebrate Black History Month with some of the best television work of the late comedian Flip Wilson.

Wilson is perhaps best remembered for his Emmy winning weekly variety show, Flip, during which he often donned dress and wig to create his female alter ego, Geraldine Jones.

Here’s Geraldine in a sketch with “Broadway” Joe Namath:

Flip, which ran on NBC from September 1970 to February 1974, was followed by several network specials.

On Sunday, February 11, at 10 pm ET, GetTV will air one of those hour-long specials, Flip Wilson … Of Course. That special included the legendary Richard Pryor and was produced by Lorne Michaels, who shortly thereafter launched Saturday Night Live.

In fact, February 11 will also be a Richard Pryor tribute night. Earlier that evening, at 8 pm, GetTV will show See No Evil, Hear No Evil, the 1989 comedy starring Pryor and Gene Wilder. You can also rent See No Evil, Hear No Evil, starting at $2.99 from Google Play and other providers.

Following the Flip Wilson special, at 11 pm, you can see an early appearance by Pryor on a 1965 episode of The Merv Griffin Show, along with Phil Spector and Eartha Kitt.

Here’s an excerpt of Pryor in a return appearance that included his professed idol, Jerry Lewis:

There will be more for Flip Wilson fans Sundays at 10 pm ET throughout this month. February 18 will offer a Wilson special with Sammy Davis Jr.; then on February 25, Pryor returns in yet another special, along with Cher.

Other Legendary Comedians and Performers

GetTV is also devoting its ‘Get Lost in TV’ late-night block to legendary African-American performers. February 11 will showcase comedians such as Redd Foxx (left) Paul Mooney, Moms Mabley and Dick Gregory.

The February 18 late-night lineup will include musical entertainers Sammy Davis Jr. and Lena Horne, along with Lola Falana, Dionne Warwick and Whitney Houston.

February 25 will celebrate Motown with specials starring the Jackson 5, Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Temptations and Stevie Wonder.

The Return of Palmerstown, USA

On Sunday, February 18, at 7:30 pm ET, GetTV will broadcast the first two installments of Palmerstown, USA, which originally aired two seasons on CBS from 1980 to 1981 for a total of 17 episodes.

From producer Norman Lear and Roots’ author Alex Haley, the Depression-era family drama series, set in the South, starred Jonelle Allen, Star-Shemah Bobatoon, Beeson Carroll, Bill Duke and a pre-Family Ties Michael J. Fox. The series featured guest appearances by Morgan Freeman, Louis Gossett, Jr. (who received an Emmy nomination for Best Lead Actor for the series), Danny Glover, David Caruso, Beah Richards and Alfre Woodard.

Here’s the original title sequence:

Following its February 18 premiere, Palmerstown, USA will broadcast every Sunday at 12:30 pm.
