Winger Gets 2nd Comedy

In her fifth decade of acting, Debra Winger has reinvented herself as a pay streaming comedy star. She’s now joining the second season of Amazon’s Patriot as the mother of series protagonist Michael Dorman, while continuing into the third season of Netflix’s The Ranch as Sam Elliott’s ex-wife and Ashton Kutcher’s mother.

Patriot, which mixes drama with its comedy, features Dorman as an intelligence officer tasked with preventing Iran from “going nuclear” while dealing with PTSD, “the Federal government’s incompetence,” and his “day job” at a front industrial piping company. Winger’s character will be “a high-ranking federal government official whose obligation to her country requires distance from her son’s complicated work, while her son’s worsening mental state requires the close care of a mother.”

Here, without Winger of course, is the trailer for season one of Patriot:

In The Ranch, a sitcom focusing on a dysfunctional family, Kutcher plays an ex-football star who returns home to help his father and brother run their ranch in rural Colorado. Maggie, his mom, runs a bar called Maggie’s and lives in a trailer behind the bar. A family photo of Maggie in the opening credits is taken from Urban Cowboy, Winger’s 1980 film co-starring John Travolta. Her other roles before turning to comedy included Oscar-nominated turns in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Terms of Endearment (1983) and Shadowlands (1993).

Here’s the trailer for The Ranch, followed by a scene from Urban Cowboy:

Netflix subscribers can binge on 40 half-hours of The Ranch that are already available. Patriot’s first season of 10 hour-long episodes can be seen now on Amazon Prime. The new seasons of both Winger shows are expected to premiere later this year.
