Most entertainment media (including The Savvy Screener, alas) announce their annual “Best Of” lists a week or so before the year actually ends. Apparently, Amazon Prime knew not to do this – since its top day for streaming in 2017 turned out to be this past Saturday, December 30!

Amazon said its most-streamed series worldwide that day were the second season of The Grand Tour, which launched December 7 and has so far released four episodes, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, whose first season of eight episodes debuted November 28. It has received Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress (Rachel Brosnahan) and Best Series – Musical or Comedy).

Over the entire year, Amazon’s most popular series worldwide were the first seasons of The Grand Tour (13 episodes) and Sneaky Pete (10 episodes). In the US, Amazon’s most popular original movie was Manchester by the Sea, which the streamer first released in theaters — leading to Oscar wins for Best Actor (Casey Affleck) and Best Original Screenplay (Kenneth Lonnergan).

Amazon also revealed its most-watched trailers for upcoming originals, apparently an indicator of how well it feels that content will do in 2018. The winners: the first season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and the third season of The Man in the High Castle.

Since Amazon Prime provides more than just video content, the service also announced the year’s most-purchased physical items (including — in one of the top three spots — the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote), and its “most-borrowed” books (including – in one of the top two spots — The Handmaid’s Tale, undoubtedly spurred by the huge success of competitor Hulu’s series based on The Margaret Atwood novel, including eight Emmy Awards and three Golden Globes nominations.)
