EWTN Global Catholic Network this weekend will celebrate the beatification of the church’s first American-born martyr, Father Stanley Rother.

First up tonight at 8 pm ET is a one-hour documentary, Fr. Stanley Rother – American Martyr. Then, tomorrow, September 23, the beatification itself will be shown live from Oklahoma City from 11 am to 1 pm. All of EWTN’s programming can be streamed online.

Father Rother was an Oklahoma-born priest who served as a missionary in Guatemala from 1968 until his 1981 murder at the age of 46. , He had stayed in the country despite being targeted by right-wing extremist death squads.

Beatification is one step in a process that may eventually result in Father Rother being canonized as the first American-born saint.
