‘Comrade Detective’

This Friday, August 4, Amazon Prime will premiere the six-episode series Comrade Detective, a show that might aptly be described as a spoof of spoofs.

Channeling the spirit of such parodies as Woody Allen’s What’s Up, Tiger Lily and Steve Oedekerk’s Kung Pow: Enter the First, Comrade Detective imagines a rediscovered 1980s’ cold war cult TV classic made by the Romanian government, dubbed in English by American actors. Romania’s “most popular and longest-running series, Comrade Detective, (is) a sleek and gritty police show that not only entertained its citizens but also promoted Communist ideals and inspired a deep nationalism.”

Detective Gregor Anghel, performed by Florin Piersic, Jr and voiced by Channing Tatum, and Joseph Baciu, played by Corneliu Luici and dubbed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, investigate “the murder of fellow officer Nikita Ionesco.” Soon they uncover “a subversive plot to destroy their country that is fueled by – what else – but the greatest enemy: Capitalism.” Nick Offerman voices Captain Covaci.

Comrade Detective is a true portal into a time and place and a powerful reminder of what art can be – and it is now ready to be seen by the modern world on a larger scale than ever before,” the producers said.

You can watch Comrade Detective with an Amazon Prime subscription.
