Urban Movie Channel, a subscription streaming service showcasing African-American and “urban” entertainment, will debut The Rich and the Ruthless, a six-episode comedy series on Friday, July 28. Episodes will premiere weekly as part of UMC’s “Fall Out Fridays” summer comedy programming block featuring new series, stand-up specials and films.

Ruthless is described as “a soap-within-a-soap” about “the first black-run daytime drama in the soap opera industry.” Law & Order’s Richard Brooks plays Ruthless showrunner Augustus Barringer, who fights to save his 20-year-old soap from cancellation, “even if that means filming out of his sleek Hollywood mansion or moving the company to Jamaica.” Victoria Rowell, who played Drucilla Barber Winters for 17 years on The Young and The Restless, is Barringer’s wife Kitty, just out of rehab, looking to “make her soap diva comeback.” Rowell is also the series’ creator.

The cast also includes A Different World’s Dawnn Lewis, Coach Carter’s Robert Ri’chard, The Player’s Club’s Chrystale Wilson, The Game’s Caryn Ward Ross, The Princess and the Frog’s Michael Colyar and Girl Code’s Alesha Renee.

UMC, which costs $4.99 per month after a seven-day free trial, offers feature films, documentaries, stand-up comedy, original series, and other exclusive content. It is accessible at, on Roku, via iOS devices, as an Amazon Prime add-on subscription, and through Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire Stick. Access on Apple TV is planned for later this year.
