Sexy vs. Arty for V Day

Netflix and Amazon Prime tomorrow will each unleash specials geared to Valentine’s Day, but that’s the last thing the two have in common. Netflix’s offering is a “sexy variety show” with the express purpose of getting viewers “in the mood to make love,” while Amazon Prime’s is an animated adventure for 3-5 year-olds!

Let’s begin with Michael Bolton’s Big Sexy Valentine’s Day Special on Netflix. Featuring classic and new love songs from the ‘80s-‘90s superstar, the show also comes with comedy bonafides: its directors are Scott Aukerman, creator and host of IFC’s Comedy Bang! Bang!, and Akiva Schaffer, part of the Lonely Island comedy trio that’s perhaps best known for its series of Saturday Night Live shorts. The other members of that trio, Andy Samberg (now star of Fox’s Brooklyn 99) and Jorma Taccone guest on the special, along Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph, Michael Sheen, Sarah Silverman and others. Watch Michael Bolton’s Big Sexy Valentine’s Day Special on Netflix starting February 7.

Meanwhile, Amazon Prime premieres Heart Day, a special episode of Amazon’s Creative Galaxy series, featuring Arty, an alien artist, and his sidekick Epiphany. This time around, Epiphany “is ready to show her love with a special performance on Groovopolis, but accidentally ruins her costume before the show! She and Arty…fly into the Creative Galaxy for a solution and help all his friends along the way, learning how everyone has their own special way of saying “I heart you!” Samantha Bee (TBS’ Full Frontal) and her husband Jason Jones (TBS’ The Detour) voice Arty’s parents, with singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb also in the cast. Watch Heart Day at Amazon Prime starting February 7.
