Netflix’s Sundance Buys

Netflix has acquired worldwide distribution rights to three films showcased at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. All three will debut on the subscription streaming service later this year.

Chasing Coral, a documentary from director Jeff Orlowski, “taps into the collective will and wisdom of an ad man, a self-proclaimed coral nerd, top-notch camera designers, and renowned marine biologists as they invent the first time-lapse camera to record coral bleaching events as they happen.” The crew battles with “technical malfunctions and the force of nature in pursuit of their golden fleece: documenting the indisputable and tragic transformation below the waves.”

Chasing Coral was produced in association with Argent Pictures and The Kendeda Fund and in partnership with The Ocean Agency and View Into the Blue. You can visit to learn more.

Orlowski talks about the making of Chasing Coral:

The second film, Joshua: Teenager Vs. Superpower, tells the true story of Joshua Wong, who seeks to defend the autonomy of his homeland, Hong Kong, against an encroaching Chinese Communist Party.  When Joshua rallies “thousands of kids to skip school and occupy the streets,” he “becomes an unlikely leader in Hong Kong and one of China’s most notorious dissidents.”

“(Director Joe) Piscatella has woven together the complex and inspirational story of an unlikely activist, whose acts of bravery and conviction need to be seen around the world,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of original documentaries.

In an interview during this year’s Sundance festival, Joshua Wong, fellow activist Derek Lam and director Piscatella discuss the making of the film:

The third feature, The Incredible Jessica James, is a comedy starring The Daily Show’s Jessica Williams. Directed and written by Jim Strouse, the plot features Jessica James, a “young, aspiring playwright in New York City who is struggling to get over a recent breakup.” The cast includes Chris O’Dowd, who played Rhodes in Bridesmaids.
