Lionsgate Partners with Vimeo, Univision

Entertainment producer and distributor Lionsgate has entered separate deals with video platform Vimeo and Univision, the media company serving the U.S. hispanic market.

vimeoUnder its agreement with Vimeo, Lionsgate is making “virtually its entire catalog of television series” available through Vimeo’s soon-to-be-launched global television store. Viewers will be able to access such premium content as Orange is the New Black, Casual, The Royals, Mad Men, Weeds, Nurse Jackie and Boss, among others. Lionsgate movie titles will also be made available for rental.

Lionsgate’s “television slate includes nearly 80 series on 40 different networks, and they are a great partner with whom to kick off a service that will bring premium scripted shows from the US to our hundreds of millions of viewers around the world,” said Barry Diller, Chairman and Senior Executive of Vimeo parent company IAC.

The Vimeo global television store will officially launch October 18 at the MIPCOM 2016 Global Market in Cannes.

Like YouTube, Vimeo offers a mix of user-generated and professionally produced videos. Certain titles can be rented or purchased; others are available at no cost. All videos are ad-free. Vimeo also offers free and paid membership plans for those wishing to host videos.

New Subscription Service for Hispanic Consumers

univisionIn another deal, Lionsgate and Univision will launch a subscription video on demand (SVOD) movie service early next year for the fast-growing US Hispanic market, a demographic that now represents more than 50 million consumers.

The service will feature Spanish-language box office hits encompassing a range of genres, as well as “current titles from across the Spanish-speaking world, with many available on the same date as their theatrical release in Latin American markets.” The service will also offer titles from Lionsgate’s joint venture with Televisa, Pantelion Films, and Spanish-dubbed versions of Hollywood films from Lionsgate’s 16,000-title collection, as well as other libraries. Films are expected to include Instructions Not Included, Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos, and No Manches Frida.

“Hispanic movie-goers are one of the fastest-growing segments of the entertainment business today, and this platform offers a unique value proposition combining premium content, advanced technology and tremendous accessibility,” said Randy Falco, president and chief executive officer for Univision Communications, Inc.

Lionsgate already offers SVOD services that include Tribeca Shortlist, launched with Tribeca Enterprises last fall, Comic-Con HQ, which debuted in July, and Kevin Hart’s Laugh Out Loud comedy platform, which debuts early next year.
