Netflix Docs to Screen in Toronto

Netflix plans to introduce four new original documentaries at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), scheduled for September 8-18. The films will then be made accessible to Netflix subscribers throughout the fall.

The documentaries include:

The White Helmuts – This short shows three volunteer rescue workers as they try to save, at considerable personal risk, the beleaguered citizens of war-torn Aleppo, Syria and Turkey. Directed by Orlando von Einsiedel and producer Joanna Natasegara, The White Helmuts is described as “both a snapshot of the harrowing realities of life for ordinary Syrians who remain in the country, and a humbling portrait of the power of the human spirit.” It will be available on Netflix starting September 16.

Amanda Knox
‘Amanda Knox’

Amanda Knox – The story of Amanda Knox, the American student accused of having murdered her roommate Meredith Kircher in Italy in 2007, made world headlines. Having spent four years in prison, her guilt became, in part, a referendum on the Italian criminal justice system, at least in the court of public opinion.

“Was she a cold-blooded psychopath who brutally murdered her roommate or a naive student abroad trapped in an endless nightmare?” Netflix subscribers can watch and speculate starting September 30.

Into the Inferno – German director Werner Herzog and volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer explore “some of the world’s most mythical volcanoes in Indonesia, Ethiopia, Iceland and North Korea.” The documentary. produced by Werner Herzog Film and Spring Films, is available on Netflix October 28.

Elephants
‘The Ivory Game’

The Ivory Game – Directors Richard Ladkani and Kief Davidson go undercover to document illegal global ivory trafficking and how the practice is endangering African elephants, “dangerously nearing closer and closer to extinction.” It launches on Netflix November 4.
