Streaming video competitors Hulu and Netflix have announced content licensing deals that considerably expand their libraries of children’s programming.
In an agreement with the Disney-ABC Television Group, Hulu acquired streaming rights for full prior seasons of kids’ titles from Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD. The deal will add more than 500 episodes and more than 20 original movies from the networks to the Hulu Kids library.
New exclusives include all past season episodes of Disney’s spy comedy K.C. Undercover, as well as Disney XD’s animated series Gravity Falls and Star vs. The Forces of Evil. Hulu will also have exclusive streaming rights to all episodes of former Disney Channel series Dog With A Blog and Austin & Ally. Disney Junior’s Sheriff Calie’s Wild West and Henry Hugglemonster are also part of the package. Hulu will make the newly acquired shows available later this month, with subsequent seasons accessible to subscribers after the last episode of each season is broadcast.
Disney Junior’s animated series Doc McStuffins and Bunnytown are already available for streaming exclusively on Hulu.
Separately, Netflix acquired five original animated shows, including:
Skylanders Academy – The animated action-comedy follows the Skylanders team, a ragtag group of heroes who travel the Skylands universe to protect it from evil-doers. The first 13 episodes will premiere this fall, with a second season in late 2017.
Llama Llama – Based on the book series by author and illustrator Anna Dewdney, Llama Llama is an animated show that focuses on lead character Llama, his parents, grandparents and best friends. Llama Llama is scheduled to premiere in 2017 .
Spirit Riding Free – Inspired by the Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Spirit Riding Free is the story of a mustang who could not be tamed. The series will premiere exclusively on Netflix in 2017.
Spy Kids: Mission Critical – From producer Bob Weinstein, this animated adventure comedy series is based on the Spy Kids film franchise. Spy Kids: Mission Critical will be available to Netflix members in 2018.
Hilda – The show is based on Luke Pearson’s graphic novels about a blue-haired girl who travels from the magical wilderness of her home to find new adventures in the city of Trolberg. Netflix members will be able to stream Hilda beginning in 2018.
Netflix has also renewed Kong: King of the Apes for a second season. In the season one cliffhanger, heroes Kong and Lukas were falling into a volcano at the hands of series villain, Botila. In 2017, when season two premieres, Netflix subscribers will learn their fate.
