‘Last Chance U’: The Making of NFL Stars

Last Chance U, an original six-part documentary series that follows a group of young NFL aspirants, is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Netflix July 29.

The series follows recruits to undefeated Eastern Mississippi Community College (EMCC), which has won three straight National Championships. The EMCC Lions have gained renown in junior college sports for recruiting top athletes, some of whom have struggled with poor academic performance or behavioral issues. Under Coach Buddy Stephens, EMCC is described as having “one of the most successful but least known athletic programs.”

More than 20 EMCC players per year are said to secure football scholarships at four-year universities, and nine former Lions now are in the NFL.  As the Lion’s latest season unfolds, Last Chance U shows players confronting personal challenges while playing dominating football, talking to recruiters, enduring intense physical training, and responding to unexpected developments.

Other Netflix original documentaries and docuseries include Making a Murderer, Cooked, Oscar-nominated films Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom, What Happened, Miss Simone?, The Square, and Virunga, and the Emmy-nominated docuseries Chef’s Table.
