Spincast Sets Sights

The Savvy Screener this week spoke with Mario L. Castellanos, CEO of Spincast TV, about his vision for the new streaming service. You can watch Spincast now via its iOS or Android app.

TSS: Who founded Spincast?

Castellanos: The originating founders were Daniel Thompson, our CTO, and Denise Benkert, VP of business development and customer experience. I came in a short time later as CEO, and our VP of product is Frank Dreyer.

TSS: What makes Spincast different from other streaming video platforms?

Castellanos: Three key differences are privacy, choice and desired advertising.

With privacy, other online entertainment services want access to personal private data, whether you want to give it or not. We don’t. We are a non-subscription service and don’t require registration.

We believe viewers should choose what they want to watch, not some backroom programmer making the decision for them. We curate for format quality and technical acceptance but we don’t “greenlight.” Other streaming services and networks reject 99 out of 100 program ideas. We want those 99 because we know we can air all of them! If only a few of the 7.1 billion pairs of eyeballs around the world watch any one show, that’s going to be a very large number.

We believe viewers should choose what they want to watch, not some backroom programmer making the decision for them.

We’ve also developed SPAADE™ (Spincast’s Programmatic Addressable Advertising Distribution Engine) which uses non-invasive psychographic segmentation to deliver ads that individual viewers prefer and can relate to.

TSS: Your library is still small. What can viewers expect to see on Spincast in the future?

Castellanos: Once we get the investment to complete our infrastructure, we expect to have tens of thousands of titles from all over the world with a focus on original and local content. We already have over 10,000 titles contracted from a content distributor, plus titles from multitudes of others who have told us, “call us when you’re ready.”

Our goal is to have the viewer tune in to Spincast and say, “Wow, I never knew about this” or “I’ve never seen this before and I really like it!”

TSS: How does Spincast get this content? Do you have exclusive titles?

Castellanos: Our content comes directly from content producers or owners. So we don’t have to worry about licensing fees, legal or regional restrictions, etc. We don’t have exclusivity now nor are we demanding it from our content providers. Eventually, we do expect to have exclusivity but that will be because it’s mutually beneficial to the producers and us. As for original content, that is a relative term. We have content now that you would otherwise see only in a small market somewhere.

Our goal is to have the viewer tune in to Spincast and say, “Wow, I never knew about this” or “I’ve never seen this before and I really like it!”

TSS: In addition to your app, can viewers watch on connected TVs? Can they watch on the web?

Castellanos: We’re available now on smart-TVs from brand name platforms, and are in the process of completing the technical requirements to be included on additional brand names. This should be completed in the coming weeks. Eventually, we expect to be available on gaming devices and through our website.

TSS: What do you envision the streaming industry looking like in five years, and what will Spincast’s role be at that time?

Castellanos: I expect a great deal of consolidation. What we’re trying to get across to investors and content providers is that we’re independent. Almost every other player is owned or heavily subsidized by major studios, media companies, technology companies, platforms, etc., all of which naturally have their interests and content in mind. Spincast is unabashedly 100% profit motivated while simultaneously providing content viewers will want to discover.

I see us as a major player providing access to every single content producer, broadcaster and network around the world – even the subscription providers.

TSS: What can people expect to hear about Spincast next? Any news you’d like to break?

Castellanos: Actually, yes! We’re announcing Spincast ‘Cinema de…’ This will concentrate on several “Continental” flavors such as Cinema de Africa, Cinema de South America, Cinema de Asia, etc., where we’ll highlight content from those regions of the world. Artists from around the world will now have access to a global audience which fits in with our focus of “new, undiscovered and original.”

TSS: Anything else you’d like to tell our readers?

Castellanos: Yes, to viewers and content providers alike, give us your tired eyes, your poor indifference, your huddled masses yearning to see free… oh wait… I think somebody else has said something like that.
