The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels will star in Hulu’s The Looming Tower, a drama series that “takes a controversial look at how the rivalry between the CIA and FBI may have inadvertently set the stage for the tragedy of 9/11 and the war in Iraq.”

Daniels will play John O’Neill, “the determined, at times bull-headed chief of the New York FBI’s Counter-Terrorism unit,” who “is rightly convinced that the US has been targeted for attack by Al Qaeda,” but encounters antagonism and recalcitrance from other government agencies, including the CIA.

The series of 10 one-hour episodes, based on Lawrence Wright’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 9/11 expose, is being adapted by writer Dan Futterman (Foxcatcher, Capote) and director Alex Gibney (Going Clear: Scientology and The Prison of Belief, We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks). Wright also wrote Going Clear, which Gibney adapted for HBO.
